Bookstore Karver - the 10th anniversary

Karver_10_god_final

On April 12th of 2015 Bookstore Karver (www.karver.org) will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The bookstore has become the entity without which the cultural “map” of not only Montenegro, but the rest of the region of Southern-Eastern Europe, wouldn’t be the same. We are quite happy with that fact, as well as with the fact that we have had the support of the European cultural policy, from the very beginning and to a large extent. In that sense, the bookstore Karver could even be the most purposeful and fruitful project – from the very opening, the contest Bibliodissey from which the bookstore has been established, and then the support from the various programs and contests like ECF, Pro Helvetia, collaborations with embassies and cultural centers’ support from Europe and USA.

Cultural system in Montenegro will never be able to lean on the market’s policy, which is not the case in larger countries and languages with more speakers. That’s why it is so important for the officials to accentuate the “case” of the Montenegrin “cultural exception” and that this fact is to be considered when applying for funds with quality programs of EU.

International Literary Festival Where I'm calling from Podgorica 2015, for the 7th time, develops the concept of an international multimedia festival that represents the best contemporary writers from the world and region as well as the contemporary literary creation through film and theatrical poetics and audio forms. The goal of the festival is to support the development of critical awareness related to the literary and artistic works, to represent the authors and their creation in direct contact with the audience, to popularise literature and promote Montenegrin literary production in the world and region.

The festival Where I’m calling from, Podgorica 2015 is organised by the bookstore Karver (LLC Sibila) in Podgorica.

The importance and number of authors, writers, artists, publishers from Montenegro and countries in the region, Europe and America, which were represented in five editions of festival, was most impressive. We would mention some of them: Tomaž Šalamun, Tess Gallagher, Claudio Magris, Otto Tolnai, Miljenko Jergović, Slavoj Žižek, Damir Avdić, Kenneth White, Ivana Simić Bodrožić, Vladimir Arsenijević, Vladimir Pištalo, Daniel Levers, Veronique Nahoum Grappe, Borivoj Radaković, Lordan Zafranović, Semih Kaplanoğlu, Arsen Dedić, Goran Vojnović, Jurij Hudolin, Bosiljka Pušić, Zuvdija Hodžić, Ante Tomić, Miloš Radivojević, Faruk Šehić, Božo Koprivica, Nenad Popović, Teofil Pančić, Boško Zatezalo, Olja Savičević Ivančević, Tatjana Gromača, Hayriye Ünal, Omer Erdem, Haydar Ergulen, Sreten Asanović, Ognjen Spahić, Andrej Nikolaidis, Enver Kazaz, Tanja Mravak, Balša Brković, Vladimir Vojnović, Melina Kamerić, Srećko Horvat, Igor Štiks, Andro Martinović, Milena Dravić, Svetozar Cvetković, Jurica Pavličić, Josip Osti, Lilja Dirjan, Bogumil Đuzel, Dušan Jovanović and many others.

The organizers of the festival could be proud of the valuable publishing activities, within five festivals - 8 books were published: two books Out of corridor, Vranac - the best short story 2010 and 2011 (comprising 52 published short stories selected in the competition Vranac - the best short story); Les nouvelles - five Montenegrin authors translated into French language; Short stories- 10 stories of Montenegrin writers translated into English language and edited by Zoran Paunović; Out of corridor (2009.) - the book comprising the 25 best authors of short story from the region; Inner translation, edited by Enver Kazaz and Davor Beganović (Pištalo, Hemon, Tolnai, Šalamun, Jergović, Mehmedinović, Srbljanović). The books were co-published with VBZ, Zagreb (Croatia) and Naklada Ljevak, Zagreb (Croatia); Mirko Kovač, Malvina and other stories and Arsen Dedić, Your Tender Years.

The festival is characteristic by its multimedia approach in presenting of literal works, acclaimed renown of the guests, and special way of presenting literal work (audio stories), which is noticed and pointed out by the guests of the Festival and audience, great organisation of the Festival, attendance of the great number of publishers from the region, authors, partners, culture institution, sponsors, and media sponsors (Municipality of Podgorica, Ministry of culture of Montenegro, City Zagreb – Ministry of culture and sport, French Cultural Centre - Podgorica, Montenegrin National Theatre – Podgorica, Tourist Organisation – Podgorica, KIC – Podgorica, JC Plantaze – July 13th, publishers: Dani, Buybook (Bosnia and Herzegovina), VBZ, Algoritam, Zagreb, VBZ Belgrade, Durieux, VBZ, Ljevak, Algoritam, Fraktura (Croatia), XX vek, Fabrika knjiga, VBZ Beograd, Clio, Geopoetika (Srbija), Dani, Bybook (BiH), Onufri (Albania), magazines: Dani (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Vreme, Peščanik (Serbia), Zarez (Croatia),  media IN TV, Atlas TV, Montenegro, radio Antena M, Montenegro, cooperation between institutions: Municipality of Podgorica, publishers from the region, a great atmosphere between Festival guests and audience.

"Where I'm Calling From", Podgorica 2010

I am grateful for joy and shared satisfaction that the little achievements built-in to the Festival “Where I’m calling from”, Podgorica 2010 are bringing. In September last year, Nenad Popovic, for example, had supported the idea to invite Claudio Magris. Finally, this extraordinary erudite, literature professor, chronicler of valleys and the coasts (all these beautiful books: Microcosmi, Stadelmann, In the contrast, were translated by Ljiljana Avirovic for Durieux publishing house) will be in our Cathedral on June 26th. In our phone conversations, I share hopes with Ljiljana that he will receive the Nobel prize.

During the whole autumn, and finally celebrating work and wine with our friends Verica Maras and  Dusan Kankaras, we were planning the open competition Vranac – the best short story  2010.  On June 26th and 27th Enver Kazaz, Teofil Pancic and Bozo Koprivica have chosen thirty stories, out of 1650 stories that have arrived and 1250 that they had read in two months (!!!). They picked out a completely different generation of storytellers. Daily and weekly newspapers published the open competition on February 5th 2010 - Zarez, Dani, Vreme, Vijesti, Pobjeda, Peščanik, and many other web portals in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia creating unique story space. Stories arrived via this web-site from houses, offices, dormers from Sisak, Nis, Zagreb, Tuzla Podgorica, Petrovac, Svilajnac, Gornji Vakuf and Belgrade. The book Out of corridors will be published on June 23rd, on the first day of the Festival. On June 27th, the authors will receive prizes and a handshake with the beautiful lady Tess Gallagher. Her book Dear ghosts, selected poems, was published in December, Bec has translated and represented it wonderfully in Karver bookstore. Our opportunities are magnificent because Tess understands how Chekhov connects us, and Ljubo Djurkovic. Because of this we will present her book in Montenegrin Royal theatre Zetski dom where we made and played special performances. We can’t show enough admiration and inspiration for the translation work of Zoran Paunovic. While we are finishing this Festival program, I am receiving compliments for him from writers and translators from ex-Yu region. Zoran had chosen 11 stories for the book Short stories, Contemporaray Montenegrian Short Stories. It is not an issue that this kind of book was necessary and that I can finally present a book in brilliant translation by Randall A. Major and Terence McEneny including stories by: Sreten Asanovic, Zuvdija Hodzic, Balsa Brkovic, Bosiljka Pusic, Ognjen Spahic, Jovan and Andrej Nikolidis, Lena Ruth Stefanovic, Vladimir Vojnović, Dragan Radulović.

Festival started with Slavoj Zizek’s lecture on April 8th, Enjoy in your own ideology. Andrej Nikolaidis was in correspondence with Srecko Horvat, in an, above all, provocative and attracting dialogue. Because of this Podgorica went to KIC Budo Tomović and exposed willingly to mental gymnastics, so necessary to all the cities in the world. Zizek was under the beam as a real star, provocative and funny. He was searching for, and found, the right measure of speech which, to the ideology predisposed citizens of this town, has shifted focus.

Hunger for a story is huge in this town. Storytelling is more neglected than ever. Real stories have moved from books into a few magazines, culture appendixes.

From June 23rd to 28th, merry and self-esteemed people will be in Karver bookstore, at the Festival, in our town, confident in having the most important and the best stories. We are welcoming them and celebrating recognition of the same civilization described in the stories.
